The focus of my dissertation is the influence of the right to respect for private life, as guaranteed by Article 8 of European Convention on Human Rights, on the Data Retention Directive (2006/24/EC). This controversial EU law imposed a mandatory duty on Member States to require communication service providers to retain the communications data (otherwise referred to as "metadata" under US law) of citizens for law enforcement purposes for up to two years.
