Research interests

I lead the open oceans group at the British Antarctic Survey, and personally spend a lot of time analysing the dynamics that emerge from coupled climate models. In particular I am interested in understanding the coupling between the ocean overturning circulation and the atmosphere, the primary interface of which occurs in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. Examining dozens of variables across hundreds of years of simulated data in 50+ disparate climate models is obviously a big data problem, but one that has not yet tapped machine learning techniques in a particularly rigorous manner. I would like to apply machine learning to this problem in order to uncover dynamical relationships between variables and processes within these models in order to assist in developing robust climate projections.

About us

The Cambridge Big Data Strategic Research Initiative brings together researchers from across the University to address challenges presented by our access to unprecedented volumes of data. Our research spans all six Schools of the University, from the underlying fundamentals in mathematics and computer science, to applications ranging from astronomy and bioinformatics, to medicine, social science and the humanities

In parallel, our research addresses important issues around law, ethics and economics, in order to apply Big Data to solve challenging problems for society.

Cambridge Big Data supports collaboration and knowledge transfer in this growing field.
