Research Interests

My research focuses on international economic law and international dispute settlement. My main project at the moment is an empirical analyses of thousands of bilateral treaties. The project addresses questions about model treaties such as: how widespread is boilerplate in treaty-making? What value does boilerplate add? Who borrows from whom and why? When and why do states use boilerplate treaties? What mechanisms of diffusion are at work? Does the use of model treaties lead to convergence in treaty terms? Do model treaties facilitate the imposition of central treaty terms on weaker state parties? How do boilerplate treaties fit into the theory of the sources of international law? And what are the systemic implications of the widespread use of boilerplate treaties for international law?
