Research Interests

Our lab - the JDRF/WT Diabetes and Inflammation Laboratory - aims to identify and characterise the effects of the susceptibility genes and pathways for type 1 (childhood) diabetes. The work focuses on genetics, genomics and functional studies, and, more recently, experimental medicine. While our data may be relatively large by volume by the standards of the early 2000s (10^5 samples, 10^7 genotypes, 10^3 images) the main "big data" challenges are: (i) the complexity of joining across datasets seamlessly; (ii) data curation and completeness in trials; (iii) data governance and access issues for human subject data in medical research. This is team science, with a team responsible for data in the lab. I am head of that group, and also sit on several national Data Access Committees, with a remit to promote genetic data access.
